Nut milks are all the rage—and they’re a great alternative to dairy. But did you know you can make your own? If you want to avoid preservatives and packaging (or if you don’t use enough to justify always buying store-bought), learn how to make nut milk with these three easy DIYs.
Note: Homemade nut milks will not last as long as store-bought. Store in the coldest part of your refrigerator (in an airtight container) 2-3 days before discarding.
How to Make Almond Milk
Ingredients
- 1 cup raw almonds soaked for 8 hours
- 4 cups water
- Liquid sweetener to taste optional
Instructions
- Take your soaked almonds (throw away the soaking water), and place them in a blender. Add the 4 cups of fresh water. Blend for 1 to 2 minutes until the almonds are ground down.
- Pour your almond milk into a nut milk bag (see notes) over a large bowl. Squeeze the bag so that the milk flows through the bag and into the bowl. The almond pulp should be left inside the bag.
- Sweeten your milk if desired. Place the milk into a container, and store it in the coldest part of the refrigerator. The milk should last 2 to 3 days.
How to Make Sunflower Seed Milk
Ingredients
- 1 cup raw sunflower seeds soaked for 8 hours
- 4 cups water
- Liquid sweetener to taste optional

How to Make Hemp Seed Milk
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup hemp seeds
- 2 cups water
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla
Instructions
- Take the hemp seeds and place them in a blender. Add the 2 cups of water. Blend for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Pour the hemp milk into a nut milk bag (see notes) over a large bowl. Squeeze the bag so that the milk flows through the bag and into the bowl. The hemp seed pulp should be left inside the bag and discarded.
- Sweeten the milk, if desired. Place milk into a container in the coldest part of the refrigerator. The milk should last 2 to 3 days before spoiling.
